Clare (Jandos) Ostendorf was my paternal grandmother. She was my very best friend and confidant while I was growing up, and it was probably because of her influence and steadfast belief in me that I pursued the education I did, including graduating from the United States Naval Academy.
Every last Sunday of the month, we would all gather at her home for dinner. Being from a family of 12, she learned to cook at a very young age, and Lord could she cook! She was also a very bright woman and could spell just about any word you gave to her, having won numerous spelling bees as a young woman. Her eyes had a twinkle that I will never forget and her kitchen was a place of delicious smells, tasty treats, open arms ready for a big hug, and always an avid ear for my daily triumphs and struggles.
These are her recipes. My hope and prayer is that you enjoy the food we are preparing just as I did as a boy and young man. I further hope that you enjoy these dishes around the dinner table with your family, during a big game, or just as delicious comfort food when you too are ruminating over daily triumphs and struggles.
That’s exactly what Grandma Clare would want for all of us.
Stay safe, friends!
Love, Stella and Bob
